Community Conversation on Climate Accountability and Oil Industry Immunity
People for Planet and Democracy recently helped convene a community conversation with U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and partner organizations to discuss efforts by oil and gas companies to seek legal immunity from climate-related accountability.
The discussion focused on a growing national issue: proposals that could limit the ability of states and communities to pursue legal action tied to environmental harm, including ongoing efforts in Connecticut to hold fossil fuel companies accountable.
One key theme from the conversation was the importance of public awareness. Many people are still learning about this issue, even as related efforts are being discussed at both the state and federal level.
“Immunity from accountability is so extraordinary… we shouldn’t even consider it.”
— U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal
Key takeaways from the conversation included:
Proposed immunity could affect state-level accountability efforts.
The issue has parallels to past corporate accountability cases.
Public awareness remains limited but is growing.
Community engagement is important as these policy conversations continue.
