About People for Planet and Democracy

People for Planet and Democracy is a nonprofit organization focused on strengthening communities through environmental stewardship, civic engagement, and education.

We believe that healthy communities depend on both a thriving natural environment and a strong democracy. By helping people better understand the systems that shape their lives, we aim to inspire informed participation, thoughtful dialogue, and positive action.

Through educational events, community conversations, and youth-focused opportunities, People for Planet and Democracy works to connect people with the issues that matter most for the future of our planet and our communities.

Leadership

People for Planet and Democracy was founded by Mike Urgo, a longtime community leader with experience in local government, environmental advocacy, and civic engagement.

Mike previously served as First Selectman of North Stonington and as President of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters. Through his work in public service, environmental advocacy, and the private sector, he has seen firsthand how strong communities depend on informed citizens, responsible stewardship of natural resources, and constructive civic engagement.

People for Planet and Democracy was created to help foster these connections through education, dialogue, and support for future leaders.
